CROWN GIVES BACK
Healthy Vision Network 4 Kids (HVN4Kids)
Crown wants to renew its commitment to the community by providing children in the St. Louis Public School system with FREE vision screenings, FREE eye exams, and FREE eyeglasses through the HVN(Healthy Vision Network) 4 Kids program. To make this possible, Crown Vision Center has been working with the St. Louis Public School District to organize and schedule visits to 20 St. Louis Public Schools.
Crown Vision Center has teamed with The Essilor Vision Foundation. The Essilor Vision foundation is a public charity whose mission is to
eliminate poor vision and its lifelong consequences starting with children. The Essilor Vision Foundation will be providing Crown Vision Center with the frames and lens to make prescription eyeglasses for all children who fail their eye exam. Crown employees will be volunteering their time to perform eye screenings, eye exams and distributing glasses to grades K-6 in the St. Louis Public School system.
To make the 2010 exam process as simple as possible, Crown contacted the College of Optometry at The University of Missouri - St. Louis and made an agreement to work in conjunction with the Optometry students and get use of the mobile clinic. The mobile clinic is a 28-foot Van converted into a portable eye clinic with two fully equipped exam lanes. The Mobile Clinic will make it possible to examine twice as many kids in one day.
One of Crown’s core values is “family” and in this way the Crown Family is giving back to school children in economically
distressed areas of St. Louis. In the 2009-2010 school year, Crown Vision Center provided services to seventeen St. Louis elementary school in the St. Louis area. Between these seventeen schools, 3,793 kids were screened, 1,044 failed their screening, 528 were examined, and 403 have receive FREE glasses. We are looking forward to making this an on going program, as well as, expand our services outside of St. Louis Public Schools.

program is designed for children through the age of 14 who have no vision insurance coverage or other benefit eligibility. Crown also partnered with KidSmart to ensure that children in St.Louis have enough supplies to help succeed in school.
Crown Cares For Kids is a program that provides eligible children through the age of 14 with an eye exam, frames and lenses free of charge. The program was created in January of 1997 in response to changes in Medicaid that caused some children to lose their benefits, and also simply as a way to give back to the greater St. Louis community. To date, Crown Vision Center has helped over 1,700 children through the Crown Cares program.

KidSmart helps these children succeed in school by providing free school supplies through KidSmart’s Free Store. Donations help keep the shelves of KidSmart’s Free Store stocked with everything from crayons, markers and glue to business surplus items such as binders, envelopes and promotional items. Community volunteers stock the shelves, manage inventory and keep the free store running each shopping day.
KidSmart distributes the supplies through teachers who shop at KidSmart’s Free Store once a month. After shopping, teachers distribute the materials directly into the hands of our kids in need. Schools where 70% or more of the children are on the Federal Free and Reduced Lunch Program, a national poverty index, qualify to shop at KidSmart.
KidSmart and Crown Vision Center partner together in a community-wide back to school supply drive from August 1st to August 31st call Push for Pencils. In 2008, more than 300,000 items along with nearly $45,000 was collected to help kids in need succeed in school.
KidSmart hopes this year’s drive will bring in enough supplies to help even more local kids in need succeed in school Crown also participates in KidSmarts annual Joe Buck Celebrity Bee. A Crown doctor teams up with a local celebrity and a St. Louis student to test their knowledge in math, geography, and science. Held at The Pageant in the University City Loop, the event includes auctions, raffle, dinner by the bite and drinks.
Proceeds from the “Back to School with Joe Buck Celebrity Bee” benefit KidSmart – Tools for Learning.
Founded in 2002, KidSmart works to empower children in need to succeed in school by providing essential school supplies for them to learn. Through a free store for teachers, the basics such as crayons, loose leaf paper and scissors are available to economically disadvantaged youth.
